A very nice example of an original World War Two RAF Parachute Instructor’s Battle-blouse Padded Single-wing Brevet and Tunic/Blouse Arm Eagle c.1945 During WW-II the pilots & air-crew of Fighter & Bomber Command received very little in the way of parachute training, most of it being: ‘er, this is a ‘chute… and this is how you put it on’ style of instruction on the ground..! So the RAF parachute training that did take place, was primarily at: RAF Ringway, Tatton Park, Cheshire (now Manchester International Airport) with its motto ‘Knowledge Dispels Fear’ Here the military personnel undergoing intense training under the guidance of the RAF para instructors were the Army’s Airborne Forces & Special Operation Executives (SOE) Initial ground training led to static line jumps from tethered barrage balloons and then aircraft jumps began from the RAF’s converted Avro Whitley bombers and thence to the para-fitted out C.47 Dakotas of Troop & Transport Command., under the watchful eyes of the RAF jump instructors. However in the build-up to D-Day in Europe and the increasing war in the Far East against the Japanese, RAF parachute instructors found themselves seconded as air-crew in the roles of Parachutist & Load Despatchers. It was thanks to this vital role over the jungles of Burma, on D-Day’s ‘Operation Overlord’ June 6th 1944 and on ‘Operation Varsity’ (The Rhine Crossings) in March 1945, that RAF para instructors were awarded ‘Honorary Aircrew Status’ As a result a special Parachute single wing brevet was awarded to those who had served in the Despatcher role over Burma and in the skies over Western Europe. Measuring approx 3.5″ long carefully removed from an album, the padded brevet (in a good condition) has small glue marks as attached, whilst the single woollen airman’s upper arm eagle (measuring 3″ x 1.5″) is in a good ‘unpicked’ condition, (and also formerly stuck in an album) to make a smashing surviving pair of WW-II RAF ‘Honorary Air-crew’ Insignia.
