Rare Revolutionary War Animal Hide Encased Powder Horn from the Reginald Pelham Bolton Collection! Click images to enlarge Description Up for Consideration is a Rare Important Revolutionary War Animal Hide Encased Powder Horn from the Famous Reginald Pelham Bolton (1856-1942) Collection! c1770’s Offered to you is this Amazing Original Museum Quality Mid to late 18th Century American Revolution Military Carved Powder Horn once belonging to the famed Reginald Pelham Bolton collection. Donated February 16, 1920 to The New York Historical Society bearing the index number B-20451. Sadly, this is one of several items sold by the Society in 1994 for the purpose of raising money during the fiscal crisis. Reginald Pelham Bolton (1856-1942) was founder of the Field Exploration Committee of The New York Historical Society. He is credited with putting together what many consider to be the finest collection of Revolutionary War artifacts in the country. Upon his death in 1942, what remained of his vast collection was donated to the society and intended for permanent exhibition. We were lucky enough to have obtained this Rare Powder Horn which we had on display in Worcester, Massacttes for many years. Reginald Pelham Bolton Reginald Pelham Bolton (1856–1942) was an Anglo-American engineer, archaeologist and historian who conducted many digs in northern Manhattan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He and his fellow “Relic Hunters” uncovered thousands of artifacts. Bolton donated photographs and artifacts from his digs to the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. Bolton was born in London, England, to Rev. James Jay Bolton, and worked in England before coming to America. In 1878 he married Katherine (Kate) Alice Behenna (daughter of Captain James Behenna R.A.), and they were the parents of Ivy May and Guy Bolton, both of whom became writers. In 1892 he married Ethelind Huyck. He was the vice president of the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society and the City History Club of New York City, and president and chairman of the board of the Electric Motor Corporation. As the chairman of a committee of the Washington Heights Taxpayer’s Association, he led an unsuccessful campaign to prevent the demolition of the home of John James Audubon but was able to prevent the demolition of both Poe Cottage and the Dyckman House. He also donated collections to the Jumel Mansion and the American Museum of Natural History. Bolton was the author of over twenty books. Details The Powder horn is incredible, measuring 15.2 inches long by nearly 4.0 inches wide at base. The horn was covered in a hand sewn animal hide and could have had shoulder straps attached to either end. Amazing untouched condition. Nice carve Spout which is the only part of the actual Powder Horn which is visible. Please note the details of the hand stitching in incredible. Inventory notations have been written in hand by Pelham stating the inventory number,Date of donation to the New York Historical Society and originated from the Reginald Pelham Bolton Collection.
