Product Description: This item for sale is a new Shimano Cartridge bottom bracket…model BB-ES30. Some of it’s specifications include the following: Cup type/size: English threaded…1.37″ cups x 24 threads per inch (tpi) Shell width: 73 mm Spindle/axle type: Octalink (V2) Spindle/axle length: 118 mm Production locale: Made in Japan Please note the spindle/axle length is fairly important, because we believe Shimano made this model bottom bracket in several spindle lengths (because this model bottom bracket was matched with a couple of different cranksets…depending on the spindle length) and this offering is for one of the longer spindle lengths. From what we can tell, Shimano intended this longer spindle to be used when a chain line of 50.0 mm was desired (measured from the center of the seat tube to the middle chainring on a triple crankset). We believe this chain line was usually desired when the front derailleur was mounted on an oversized seat tube…pushing the front derailleur further to the right. We also want to emphasize this bottom bracket incorporates Shimano’s advanced Octalink technology, which resulted in a complete re-design of the bottom bracket to include a hollow (and larger) 22 mm pipe billet spindle/axle with an 8-spline interface to the crank arm…for greater strength and reduced weight. Additionally, it is important to note that Shimano designed two different Octalink spindle ends…a V1 design with each spline measuring 5 mm long x 2.2 mm wide (intended primarily for it’s XTR, Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 Octalink compatible cranksets)…and a V2 design with each spline measuring 9 mm long x 2.8 mm wide (intended primairly for it’s various Deore series, Tiagra and Sora Octalink compatible cranksets). Our research further indicates this model/size was intended for selected Shimano mountain bike cranksets from the first half of this decade. More specifically, it’s compatible with Shimano’s Deore triple crankset (Models FC-M510…beginning in 2002 when this crankset was updated to accept this 8-spline interface)…among others…so a bottom bracket designed for Shimano’s base-level groupset among it’s higher-end mountain bike components (although please note the left-side adjustable cup is made from a resin/plastic, which is common for Shimano 50-series and below cartridge bottom brackets). We prefer the aluminum alloy adjustable cups found on Shimano’s higher-end cartridge bottom brackets, so we wanted to be clear that this offering is of inferior quality in this one regard. Also (and as noted above), the V2 Octalink spindle ends are compatible with other Shimano cranksets, but please check your crankset’s spindle/axle length requirements before attempting to use this offering with another Shimano crankset…and we can try to help in this regard should you have questions). We empasize this last point, because chainline has a direct impact on shifting performance, so even though selected Shimano crank arms may have the same V2 Octalink interface, if their spindle/axle length requirements are different from this offering, then there is a strong possibility that shifting performance will suffer…so please pay particular attention to spindle lengths when it comes to purchasing any bottom bracket. As for condition, these units were bulk packed, so not in perfect cosmetic condition, but functionally they are new…having never been mounted or used. Listing Update…I have pulled this unit from my regular stocks, because of some cosmetic blemishes. As you can see in the pictures, the silver finish on the bottom bracket has corroded. These areas of concern are still smooth to the touch and all the threading is still clean, so there are no functional problems. I guess I should also mention the whole unit will be covered in the frame’s bottom bracket shell (so maybe I am making a big deal about nothing). Still, this unit has visible finishing blemish relative to my first quality units that do not have these cosmetic imperfections. For this reason, we’ll offer this unit at a modest discount for those that just want a functionally sound unit and don’t care so much about the cosmetics.
