Absolutely stunning antique Victorian Era mourning brooch made of human hair. Thanks to Queen Victoria mourning her husband Prince Albert, the customs of mourning escalated to an all new art form. One of the accessories that became popular was jewelry made of human hair. Jewelry companies became dedicated to making intricate pieces of hair jewelry that became accessible to the mass market. Books were published and classes were made available for the home crafter or lady who wished to create mourning jewelry at home. BUT…hair jewelry was not only worn for mourning. It was a novelty that was used for every day wear, while in mourning or not. This brooch was made by a company and is in rather good condition. There are a couple of spots at the back near both ends of the clasp where the hair has broken and has started to unravel. Please see all the photos for the other minor areas of breakage. There are three pieces of decoration, two bell like drops on chains and a small medallion piece that would have been used to inscribe a monogram. I do not know what these pieces are made of, but I am going to assume pot metal or brass. The pin has a “C” clasp.
